The Department of Transportation Engineering was established from the Institute of Transport, which was founded when SVŠT was established in 1938, headed by the first dean, Prof. K. Křivanec. From the very beginning and throughout its existence, this department has played a significant role in the education of domestic and foreign experts in the field of transport engineering. Contributors included Prof. F. Sklenář, Prof. M. Marek, Prof. Š. Chochol, Ing. I. Poliaček, Prof. Ľ. Rondoš, Prof. V. Medelská, Prof. I. Gschwendt, Prof. B. Bezák, and Doc. K. Bačová. Currently, it is one of the leading departments of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral studies in the field of Structural and transportation engineering, where it educates graduates in the field of road and railway construction, as well as urban communications and transport engineering, planning, and urbanism. The department was one of the first university departments to participate in the European TEMPUS educational programs since 1991, the most significant of which were the EDIPAM, TREP, TIGER, and DR TIGER projects. Through these projects, it has built on its previous successful international cooperation with leading European universities and research institutions, which offer potential for productive cooperation in education and research in transport engineering both now and in the future.
The department's experimental base is equipped with special equipment for measuring the physical and mechanical properties of road construction materials, for static and dynamic load testing of road structures and pavement surface properties.
