The Department of Hydraulic Engineering covers subjects including surface and groundwater hydraulics, construction, economic and ecological problems associated with the design, construction, maintenance and reconstruction of hydraulic structures such as weirs, waterways, harbours and structures for hydropower utilisation. Research and teaching is supported by a hydraulics laboratory.

The Department's research activities are especially aimed at problems of locks and weir hydraulics, free-surface water flow in open channels, non-stationary flow in systems, construction of small hydroelectric power plants, hydro-electric power plants and pump-fed power plants, hydrodynamics of subsurface water, impacts of hydraulic structures on the environment, and mathematical simulation of hydraulic and hydrological processes.
